Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where will the shed be built?
A. In the railway yard at Kidderminster, on the southern side of the existing turntable.

Q. How many locomotives will be kept under cover in the shed?
A. The shed is being designed to hold four full size mainline locomotives.

Q. What facilities will the shed have?
A. At least one locomotive-length pit (and possibly side pits: to be confirmed), one road with jacks to lift a full-size diesel locomotive. The jacks have already been purchased and are currently in use on the railway.

Q. What will the shed look like?
A. It is expected that the shed will look similar in size and appearance to the diesel maintenance shed recently built by the SRPS Diesel Group at Bo'ness. See here for a photographic record of its construction.

Q. Which locomotives will be stored undercover?
A. Locomotives belonging to the groups funding the project will be given preferential access to use the shed. As the groups involved own eight locomotives and maintain/operate several more, space will be given depending on the priority and type of work to be undertaken. Locomotives not receiving attention requiring the shed facility or not being regularly worked on, will not be kept in the shed.

Q. What happens if the shed project raises more money than the target amount?
A. The money will be used to provide extra facilities in the shed or at the Kidderminster Yard site.

Q. Who will own and control the use of the shed?
A. The Severn Valley Railway. The groups raising funds for the shed will exchange the money raised for shares in the railway. The railway will probably appoint a shed manager who will make the decisions about which locomotives are housed and administer access to the building.

Q. Will anybody be able to gain access to the shed to see what is going on?
A. Due to current (and expected future) Health and Safety legislation it is highly unlikely that uncontrolled access to the general public will be available. However it is expected that guided tours of the shed will be possible for groups of the public on some railway operating days or by prior appointment.
